JoBeth Allen

JoBeth Allen is a professor at Language and Literacy Education at the University of Georgia teaching courses. She focuses on writing pedagogy, poetry, developing family-school partnerships, and researching writing and critical pedagogies. Allen has been recognized and awarded the 2012 Outstanding Educator in English Language Arts by the National Council of Teachers of English for her contributions to the field of language arts in elementary education.

Allen is the author of eight books, but only two of these have focused on the success of teachers within the classroom: Literacy in the Welcoming Classroom: Creating Family-School Partnerships that Support Student Learning (2010) and Creating Welcoming Schools: A Practical Guide to Home-School Partnerships with Diverse Families (2007).

Before writing her books, Allen was an elementary school teacher, so she was aware of the issue of trying to get families involved in their students' learning process. While writing some of her books, including Literacy in the Welcoming Classroom Allen did action research with teachers in order to find out more about the issues of social justice and equality in the education system at schools and at home. She has also been a mentor to many teachers regarding these issues.

In 2010, EducationNews.org interviewed Allen about her book: Literacy in the Welcoming Classroom, and about her personal journey raising children, teaching students, to her current position teaching educators. Click here to read it.
